ETIAS for Families with Kids
When ETIAS launches in October 2026, every visa-exempt traveller to the EU will need one — including children. The good news: it's free for anyone under 18 and free for people 70 and over. Adults pay €20. Here's how to navigate a family ETIAS application.
Free for under-18s and seniors
The €20 ETIAS fee only applies to adults aged 18 through 69. Children pay nothing — but they still need their own ETIAS authorisation. So a family of four with two adults and two children pays €40, not €80.
Every child needs their own passport AND their own ETIAS
There's no concept of family ETIAS, and children can't travel on a parent's ETIAS. Make sure each child has a valid biometric passport before applying — passports must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned return date.
How long an ETIAS lasts (and the kids' problem)
ETIAS is valid for 3 years OR until the passport expires, whichever comes first. Adult passports usually last 10 years, so adult ETIAS authorisations typically run the full 3 years. Children's passports often last just 5 years, and frequently get renewed mid-cycle — so your child's ETIAS will likely need re-applying when they get a new passport.
Schengen days apply to kids too
Children are subject to the same 90-days-in-180 rule as adults. If your kids went on a school trip to Spain in April and you're planning a family trip to Italy in June, those April days count against the kids' Schengen budget too. Our free Schengen Family Calculator tracks each person individually.
