Do I Need ETIAS If I Have ESTA?
These two authorisations get confused constantly because the names sound similar — but they have nothing to do with each other. ESTA is the US system for visa-exempt travellers entering America. ETIAS is the EU's parallel system for visa-exempt travellers entering Schengen countries. Having one tells you nothing about needing the other.
Who needs ESTA
ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is required for citizens of Visa Waiver Program countries entering the United States. It costs $21, is valid for 2 years, and is applied for at esta.cbp.dhs.gov.
Who needs ETIAS
ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is required for citizens of visa-exempt countries entering the Schengen Area. Cost is €20 (free for kids under 18 and adults 70+), valid 3 years, applied for at the EU's official travel portal.
Where the confusion comes from
Both are pre-travel authorisations tied to your passport, both cost roughly the same, both come from countries whose names start with similar letters (US/EU), and the acronyms are nearly identical. They're not connected in any way.
If you're a US citizen
You don't need ESTA — that's for foreigners coming TO the US. You'll need ETIAS to visit Europe (starting October 2026), and UK ETA to visit the UK (already required).

Is ETIAS the European version of ESTA?
In concept yes — both are pre-screening tools for visa-exempt travellers. But they're run by different governments and you need to apply separately for each.
Can I use my ESTA approval to visit Europe?
No. ESTA is only valid for entry to the United States. For Europe, you need ETIAS.
